"Céad bliain is sa trí"- 103 : One hundred and three
A song composed to honour the life of my grandmother, Mary Philbin, Máire Ní Chuilibín. I wrote this song in January of this year and performed it as part of Ireland's Pan Celtic song contest 2024 in Carlow.
Mary lived to her 104th year and passed away on March 21st. She was born on the summer solstice in 1920 and left us in 2024 on the spring equinox. She was a very spiritual woman of great faith and beloved of her many children and grandchildren.
Suaimhneas síoraí ar mo sheanmháthair Máire, Mary Sheamais.
I have created a short film for this track, filmed at Sruth Fada Con, where my grandmother lived & the picture in the cover above. You can view it if you copy : youtu.be/YGyajsMx7qA?si=EuLuO9qkzHlyzqEu

lyrics
**Céad bliain is a trí**
Ag céad bliain is a trí tá Máire fós beo linn,
Ar chaula tú faoi mo shean mháthair ?
Iníon, aintín, comharsan, deirfiúir, mamaí,
Tá muid go léir ag dul in aois.
Éirigh na greine, dual faoi na gréine,
Is cuimhin léi an saol mar a bhí, lena anam dhílis.
I míle naoi gcéad is a haon nuair a tháinig Máíre ar an tsaoil.
Ní raibh ann timpeall uirthi ach Gaeilge
Lena athair Seamais Jack I Bóramh Co. Mhaigh Eó
Is lena mháthair Kate Ginty,
Éirigh na Gréine, Dul faoi na Gréine
Is cuimhin léi an saol mar a bhí
An cumhin leat na circe lachain géanna, caora bó is uainíní,
Ag súil thíos taobh na farraige, ag bailiú feamhain, bairneachaí is dúilící?
Ag céad bhliian is a trí, tá Máire fós ann dúinn.
Buíochas ó chroí a Sean mháthair
Saoirse I’d chroí ag guí go mbeidh Saoirse i d’ chroí…

At 103, Mary is still alive with us.
Did you hear of my grandmother?
Daughter, aunt, neighbour, sister, mother,
We are all growing older.
The rising of the sun, the setting of the sun,
She remembers, life as it was,
In 1921, when Mary was born,
All around her was through Gaeilge - the Irish language,
With her father, Seamais Jack in Bóramh, Co. Mayo,
And her mother, Kate Ginty.
The rising of the sun, the setting of the sun,
She remembers life as it was,
Do you remember the hens, the ducks, the geese, the sheep, cows and lambs?
Walking down by the sea, collecting seaweed and shell fish ?
At 103, Mary is still there for us.
Thank you grandmother.
I pray that there may be freedom ( Saoirse ) , in your heart..
